St. Francis Xavier, Pico Rivera, CA. Jose Luis Gonzalez reproduced, in ceramic tile, the image of the Virgen de Guadalupe from a Mexican newspaper clipping that his father, Juan S. Gonzalez, had clipped back in 1931. The article was about the 500th anniversary of the Virgen’s appearance to Saint Juan Diego. His mother still has the clipping in the same wooden frame that his father had carved.

Joe Gonzalez was commissioned to design and produce this mosaic depicting St. Joseph and Child for a priest that was retiring in Inglewood, CA. In 2017, Joe found it at St. John Chrysostom in Inglewood. Joe was assisted in the execution of this mosaic plaque by his wife, Blanca Rosa Gonzalez.

Commissioned by Utter McKinley Mortuary, this shrine to the Virgen de Guadalupe was one of Joe Gonzalez’s first projects that he designed, produced and installed in his community of East Los Angeles at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. The marble statues were carved in Italy. The statue of the Virgin is made up of different colors of marble. The team seen in the photo, taken by Joe Gonzalez, were mostly comprised of Joe’s family members and they are: Joe; Armando; Benjamin; and Danny Gaytan (not pictured), Joe’s brothers-in-law; his son, Joey, Jr.; his brother, Juan; and Mila, a mosaic artist. This project was completed in early 1969.
